Dinner Menus
Dinner is the meal we are most likely to want to work for and savor. It’s a capping of the day’s accomplishments and a celebration to look forward to every 24 hours. The final meal of the day can be carefully planned to perfection, anticipated and enjoyed with others or simply on your own, but spontaneous gatherings with friends often have a magical quality no amount of preparation can achieve, other than keeping on hand what you need to whip up a meal on a moment’s notice.
One trick to pulling off a successful dinner party is to not make it too complicated. You can serve absolutely anything you want to, but if you are looking here for menu suggestions you’ll find that most of these consist of a main course with salad and bread as accompaniments. You can make the salad a little ahead of time and don’t have to be juggling the timing of hot vegetables along with other dishes. Bread is always a good addition and keeps you from worrying about whether you have enough food. If you love to bake desserts, great – you can do that ahead of time, too, but it is also permissible to serve a dessert you didn’t prepare, such as ice cream, sherbet, fruit, or even cookies someone else made. If you are determined to show off a baked dessert, brownies are pretty quick and easy. If a guest offers to bring something, dessert, salad or bread are all good candidates.
Roast Chicken Dinner - I have a fixation with the simple elegance of roast chicken. I have served this to guests many, many times. This is a meal to serve to your parents... or your girlfriend's or boyfriend's parents.
Buttered Peas or Glazed Carrots
French Bread
Traditional Spaghetti Dinner - An all time favorite that works well for a crowd. Good for a power meal before an athletic event.
Antipasto - Crudités, thinly sliced
Genoa salami & Provolone cheese
or Tomato Sauce
Fruit and Cookies
Chili Dinner - A fun and festive meal, also good for a large gathering. Include lots of the suggested accompaniments to top off the chili.
Tortilla chips and salsa
Pizza - A great choice for the first time you cook for your girl or your guy. Almost everyone eats pizza, and it's a fun meal to prepare together.
Pork Chops - This is a great cool weather meal. The aromas from the pork chops and the gingerbread will warm you even before you get to taste them.
Chicken Pot Pie - This one of the great comfort foods. It takes a bit of work ahead of time to put it together, but then your hands are free while it cooks in the oven, and all you need to do is make a salad to go with it. This is a good meal to serve to yourself or a friend who needs some cheering up.
Ice Cream & Brownies
Steak Dinner - This is a very easy meal to prepare, but it can transcend the ordinary to make it a special meal or celebration.
Valentine's Day or Any Good Day Dinner - I know this dessert is overdoing it, and you don't really have to offer both, but ice cream and hot fudge on top of a brownie could be fun...
Italian style bread or rolls
